How to set up your own home page

Any Wabash students, faculty, and staff may set up a personal home page on Wabash's personal web page server. In fact, a sample home page has already been set up for you--all you have to do is customize it.

The procedure Wabash students follow to set up a home page varies slightly from the procedure for Wabash faculty and staff. As such, the two groups are separated below.  If you are a student, you can jump straight to the student instructions.

Personal Web Page Procudure for Wabash Faculty and Staff

  1. If you haven't done so already, take a look at your current (sample) home page. You can find it at http://persweb.wabash.edu/facstaff/username. You will have to open this location manually in your Web browser.
  2.

  3. Read the Personal Web Page Acceptable Use Policy before customizing your page. This document has important information on setting up your page, so read it carefully.
  4.

  5. Assess your "web page savvy". If you have already created Web pages for departments or courses, or for other purposes, you should be able to set up your personal page without much difficulty. If this is your first experience with creating a home page, we recommend that you first attend a Web Page Workshop. Due to the possible complexity of setting up web pages, Computer Services cannot provide individual support to faculty and staff who have not yet attended a Web Page Workshop.
  6.

  7. Locate your sample home page on the Scholar server. This is where your personal web page will be stored. Personal pages are on Scholar.User (note the difference from other college web pages, which are stored on Scholar.WWW. Inside Scholar.User is a folder called persweb. Inside persweb you will see a folder facstaff. Finally, inside facstaff you will see your own personal folder, named the same as your username. The file home.htm is your sample home page.
  8. Faculty and Academic Staff: you should be able to locate your home page without too much difficulty, since you probably already use the Scholar server to store files. If you are a PC user, you can locate Scholar.User as O:.

Administrative Staff: you may have more difficulty in locating your home page, as you normally store files on the Kane or Baxter servers, and thus may not already have a connection to Scholar.User. If you can't find your page and are running Windows 95, you should start by doubli-clicking the Network Neighborhood desktop icon (may be called WABnet on your computer) and stepping down through the servers, volumes, and folders until you find your page. If you are using Windows 3.1, you probably will need help from Computer Services in setting up a drive mapping.

If you have trouble locating your sample home page, contact Computer Services for assistance.

  9. Once you have located your home page, you can begin modifying and adding to it. There are several ways to create home pages. You can use a text editor, such as Notepad, and enter HTML code natively. Much simpler is using a Web Page editor, such as Netscape Composer (included with the Netscape Communicator suite), or even Microsoft Word. Other programs, such Claris Home Page and Adobe PageMill can be purchased. These different methods are discussed in the Home Page Workshops. If you want to use Netscape Composer, you can get information from chapter five of the Introduction to Communicator On-Line Documentation.
  10. Your main home page must be named home.htm. Recall that as you work, you can check your progress by viewing the page at http://persweb.wabash.edu/facstaff/username.

  11. Finally, after you have set up your home page, you will want to have it linked through the Wabash College Faculty/Staff On-Line Directory, so that others can find your page. When your page is set up, send email to Brad Weaver (weaverb), who will activate the link for your page.
