Wabash College Personal Web Pages
Acceptable Use Policy
Version 1.0, October 12, 1997
Introduction
Personal Web pages are a natural extension of networking services previously
offered by Computer Services. As with all activities at Wabash, the
Gentleman's Rule is an appropriate guide for those who wish to create a
personal web page.
Existing policy documents, such as the WABnet Acceptable Usage Policy,
cover most of the usage issues with regard to personal pages. Issues
specific to personal pages are described below.
Authorized Users
Any Wabash student, faculty, or staff member may set up a personal web
page on Wabash's personal web server. In fact, default home pages
are automatically generated for these users.
Other users who may have network accounts on Wabash servers-such as
spouses and children of Wabash staff and students-are not permitted access
to set up a personal web page. In addition, Wabash staff and students,
while authorized to maintain their own web page, may not provide web pages
for other non-authorized users.
Server Issues and Storage Limitations
Personal web pages are stored on the Scholar server, on the User volume,
underneath the directory /persweb/student (/persweb/facstaff for
staff). Personal account storage space is also on the Scholar.User
volume, under the directory /student (/staff for staff). Users
should be careful not to confuse the two storage areas, as anything stored
under the /persweb directory area can be seen by anyone on the Internet.
Personal web pages cannot make use of server-side processing, such as
CGI, Java, ActiveX programming, server-side image mapping, access control,
or similar techniques requiring access to or special configuration of the
Web server software.
Students are restricted to 10MB disk storage in their personal web storage
area. Note that this quota restriction is in addition to the 25MB
disk quota on student personal account area. As with the personal
file storage area, the web page quota is not generally strictly enforced
by the system, as there may be legitimate reasons why a student may need
to temporarily go over his limit. However, Computer Services will
regularly monitor disk usage, and if necessary establish disk quotas to
ensure that all users have equal access to available resources.
Faculty and staff have no disk quota restriction on their web pages,
but are expected to observe reasonable limits.
Students maintaining Web sites on their personal systems are not subject
to disk quotas or server-side processing restrictions (for pages served
from their own system). See the section Personal Web
Servers below for more information.
Accessing the Personal Web Pages
Personal web pages will be linked from the Wabash College web site through
the on-line directories. All student directory entries will link
to their home page, whether they have set up a page or not (a default home
page will be generated by Computer Services so that all students will have
a home page). Faculty and staff can request that their home pages
be linked through the directory after setting up their page.
Personal home pages can also be accessed directly at http://persweb.wabash.edu/student/username
(for student pages), or http://persweb.wabash.edu/facstaff/username
(for faculty/staff pages).
All home page links in the on-line directories will point to the personal
web page established on the Wabash web server. Students who prefer
to maintain their Web sites on their personal computers should simply put
a link on their Wabash home page to the web site on their personal system.
Commercial Endeavors
The use of personal web pages to support commercial endeavors is strictly
prohibited. Examples include: promoting or advertising goods or services;
soliciting customers or investors; selling and distributing information,
images, or computer programs; and obtaining advertisers to support your
site.
Aside from not supporting the academic mission of the College, use of
personal web pages for commercial activity is a violation of the College's
agreement with our Internet service provider, and could result in a reclassification
of our educational Internet link.
Network Performance
Personal web pages will be monitored by Computer Services for both the
number of "hits" a site generates, as well as the number of bytes served.
Personal web pages generating enough hits or network traffic to degrade
network performance will be restricted or shut down. Such action
will be taken whether the student site is served from Wabash's Web server,
or from the student's personal system.
Observation of Copyright
Be conscious of copyright when creating your pages. Just because
it is easy to get a picture from the Internet (or to scan and convert a
printed image or document to digital form) does not mean you can add it
to your page. In general, you should not put pictures, images, documents,
audio clips, video clips, or software on your pages unless you created
them, or you have written permission from the creator. All state
and federal copyright laws will be followed at Wabash College. Students
with questions about copyright should contact one of the librarians.
Personal Web Servers
Students with in-room WABnet connections can request an Internet domain
name for their system (in the .res.wabash.edu domain) and set up a Web
server independent of Wabash's personal web server. In such cases,
the student is responsible for selecting, setting up, and configuring the
Web server software. Computer Services is not able to provide assistance
with this process.
Students with personal web servers are not subject to the disk quota
or server-side processing restrictions that exist on Wabash's server, but
all other topics covered in this guide do apply. Pay particular notice
to the section on Authorized Users, Commercial
Endeavors, Network Performance, and Observation
of Copyright.
