Fantasy
Literature
I read
it—selectively, since much of what’s written today is junk.  Especially if it’s really popular.
I also write it, when I can.  I’ve got a novel in process.  Maybe I’ll post some of it as a pdf sometime…
I have taught and will teach again a
Freshman Tutorial on fantasy lit.

A tentative list of my All Time Favorites:
 - E.R.
Eddison, The Worm Ouroboros.  Unique classic; gorgeous language, great
     theme.  The best.
- Tolkien,
LOTR.  Almost goes without saying, almost
     clichéd, still great.  And the
movies are the best filmed fantasy ever.
- Mervyn
Peake, Titus Groan, Gormenghast.  More great writing, bizarre characters…
     another classic.
- Steven Boyett, The Architect of Sleep.  Unfinished
modern masterwork by my good friend DJ Steveboy.  That “unfinished” part really sucks,
     though…
- Steven
     Brust, the Vlad Taltos series.
Hard-boiled, wisecracking detective fiction meets sword and
     sorcery.  Very fun.
- Robert
     E. Howard, the Conan books.  Yeah,
they’re pulp.  But man, could Howard
     write pulp.
