I
am
a professor at Wabash College in
Crawfordsville, Indiana, a small,
private liberal arts college. It is unique for
being one of the last colleges in
the U.S. for men only.
I was a little concerned, but found no
more stupid macho culture than at any other college. Aside from the
all-male tradition there is a clear and stated
commitment to diversity of all kinds. Faculty (men and women) are
just as one might expect at a coed institution. No heterosexual
dynamics as in coed classrooms (homosexual
dynamics are more concealed) makes one more reason for class to be
about the material.
I value the liberal arts and am
delighted
to work with such fine students. My work is divided into teaching,
creative activities, recruiting and advising, and serving on
committees. I teach music
theory, composition, electronic music, and college-wide humanities. I
keep two or three projects underway, which are eventually performed on
commission,
at conferences and festivals, and at various institutional events.
The mascot at right is Wally Wabash.
Our sports teams are the "Little Giants." Students are "Wallies," in
contrast to
students at rival DePauw University (alma mater of Dan Quayle) who are
known as "Dannies."
