Reading guide for Fri. 3/16: Russell, “William James’s Conception of Truth,” essay 5 of Philosophical Essays (PDF: 1up, 2up)

Russell’s arguments are fairly straightforward, so I won’t comment on them. You should, as you read these arguments, think how James might reply. (As Russell says in his initial footnote, James did reply; if you are curious, you can find that reply as the first part of ch. XIV of The Meaning of Truth, which is included in the text browser on the course Moodle site.)

Many of Russell’s quotations from James come not from the chapter you read but from chapter II of Pragmatism (that’s the source for ones in page range 43-81). If you’d like to check theirs contexts, the following are links to that chapter in PDF format: 1up, 2up. (These are also available on the course Moodle site as PDFs and, as part of the whole book, in the text browser there.)
