Write a paper (6-8 pp. or 1800-2400 words) in which you discuss an issue arising in connection with one of the works read in the last four weeks of the course.
Your discussion may take a number of forms. For example, you might
• raise an objection to a claim made in the work,
• defend the view expressed in the work against an objection that has been made to it (or that you can imagine being made to it),
• compare a view expressed in the work with another position (which need not be represented in any of the works from the last four weeks), or
• suggest a way of combining a view expressed in the work with another that is not considered there;
and there are probably any number of other possibilities. In general, you should look for a topic that will provide you with some opportunity both to give an exposition of something you have read in the last four weeks and to develop your own thinking about an issue in epistemology.
Thinking back to an issue that interested you in your reading or our discussions, is probably the best way to look for a topic, but you could also look in the journal literature. Searching in JSTOR or on EBSCO on article titles, authors’ names, or distinctive terms will give you leads though, of course, the references will not always point you to usable topics. If you find any difficulty identifying a topic, I will be happy to help.
Although I will be happy to accept hard copies of these, I’d prefer to receive them via e-mail, as attachments or (if there is no special formatting) in the body of a message.
