Write a paper (c. 2-3 pp. or 600-900 words) in which you discuss a significant relation between two short passages in the Investigations. These passages might be short numbered remarks, paragraphs within remarks, or even single sentences. The relation you consider may take a number of forms, but I can think of two likely possibilites:

you consider two contiguous passages and discuss a reason Wittgenstein might have placed them next to one another, or

you pick a passage you take to shed light on another and discuss the understanding it provides.

Of course, a paper might fit both descriptions, and I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a paper that satisfied the assignment but fit neither.

You should, in any case, say something about each passage in its own right, but you should not feel obliged to comment on every aspect of the two passages. Choose those aspects of them which are relevant to the relation between the two that you wish to discuss.

I have not asked you to consider an objection to Wittgenstein or to evaluate philosophical positions. But, in many cases, those things will be a natural part of your discussion of the relation between passages; indeed, some passages in Wittgenstein are part of a dialogue between unidentified parties. And part of what makes a relation between passages significant is that discussing it will lead you to address philosophical issues or ideas.

Although I’ll be willing to accept your essay on paper, I’d prefer that you send a copy by e-mail (either as an attachment or in the body of a message). My address is helmang@wabash.edu.
