Requirements: first paper (default due date: Tues. 4/7)

Write a paper (c. 3 pp. or 900 words) in which you discuss one of the issues or problems that arises in the Foundations of Arithmetic and the implications for it of Frege’s account of Number.

• The issue or problem may be one of those presented by Frege as he considers the views of others in the first part of the book; but Frege considers others after he has begun presenting his own views, and you might choose one of these.

• Although, in many cases, Frege explicitly states his views on some issue, he does not address all the topics presented early in the book once he has elaborated his own account, so you may need draw the implications yourself based on hints provided by his remarks in the first part. You should, of course, cite textual evidence for the views you attribute to him, but this evidence may be indirect.

• Your discussion should include your assessment of the strengths or weaknesses of Frege’s stand on an issue or the adequacy of his solution to a problem.

I’ll be happy to help you look for topic that will fit this format if nothing comes to mind, but just about anything Frege discusses can be made to fit. Of course, this is a short paper, so the topic you choose must be narrowly defined. The easiest way to do that would be to begin with a short passage which either presents the issue or problem or presents Frege’s considered views.

Although I will be happy to accept hard copies of these, I’d prefer to receive them via e-mail, as attachments or (if there is no special formatting) in the body of a message.
