Requirements: second paper (default due date: Thurs. 3/5)

Write a paper (c. 5-6 pp. or 1500-1800 words) in which you discuss an issue that appears in two of the figures read in the course. In the simplest case, this will be an issue on which two of the people read disagree, but this is not necessary. Indeed, the figures you discuss may be in substantial agreement, and there are, of course, many degrees in between.

The extent to which and the way in which the two figures address the issue may also vary. For example, one may say something that raises an issue that another discusses. Each may say something that touches on an issue that neither develops very far. Or perhaps each provides an extended argument developing a point of view.

Whether or not the people you discuss develop the issue very far, you should. That is, part of what you should do in the paper is to discuss what you take to be at issue and also consider two sides of the issue (whether or not both sides are represented by the figures you discuss).

So your paper should include the following elements:

• the presentation of an issue,

• an exposition of things said by two figures read in the course that touch on the issue,

• a discussion of two opposing points of view on the issue and their relative strengths.

The way these elements are organized can vary considerably depending on the issue and the figures you choose. In particular, remember that the second and third of these elements might be identical but need not be. These specifications are designed to open up a variety of different topics, but I’ll be happy to help you look for topics fitting them if nothing comes to mind.
