Write a paper (c. 5-6 pp. or 1500-1800 words) on one of the topics below. In evaluating your papers, I will consider both your understanding of Kripke and your own thinking regarding the issues his book raises, so be sure to give ample attention to presenting your own thinking. An important aspect of the latter is your success in discussing both sides of any issue you consider.
• Kripke's claim that proper names are rigid designators.
• Kripke's suggestion that statements like "Stick S is 1 meter long" (said of the standard meter) are contingent even though a priori.
• Kripke's criticism of one part of the description theory.
• The picture Kripke offers of how proper names refer.
• Kripke's claim that statements of identity between proper names are a posteriori even though necessary.
• One part of Kripke's discussion of natural kind terms such as "gold."
• The difference Kripke claims to find between "Heat is molecular motion" and "Pain is C-fiber stimulation."
• A topic of your own, cleared with me in advance.
