Write a paper (c. 6-8 pp. or 1800-2400 words) on an issue appearing in something you’ve read in this course. You should
(i) explain the issue and
(ii) present and defend a position concerning it.
In doing this, you should
(a) discuss in some detail a portion of something read in the course and
(b) consider at least one objection to the view you defend.
The position you defend may be one you hold, but it need not be, and your exposition of a passage from a reading may serve you in any of several ways—e.g., to help set up the issue you will discuss, to help present the position you wish to defend, or to provide an objection to it.
The way these elements are organized can vary considerably depending on the issue you choose. The specifications are designed to open up a variety of different topics, but I’ll be happy to help you look for topics fitting them if nothing comes to mind.
Although I’ll be willing to accept your essay on paper, I’d prefer that you send a copy by e-mail (either as an attachment or in the body of a message). My address is helmang@wabash.edu.
