Reading guide for Wed 2/9: Hamblin, Fallacies, ch 4, pp 169-176
and selections (your choice) from Hansen and Pinto, Fallacies, ch 5, pp 67-84

Hamblin's discussion of Whately brings to a close his historical account of how the textbook tradition arose. You have a representative selection from Whately's logic text in the Hansen and Pinto, and that's part of your assignment.

The most important idea in Whately, that of presumption and burden of proof, is more fully developed in his rhetoric text. Hansen and Pinto don't include selections from that, but Hamblin gives an extended account, which will probably be the focus of our discussion.
