Reading guide for Wed 2/2: Hamblin, Fallacies, ch 4, pp 134-158
and selections (your choice) from Hansen and Pinto, Fallacies, ch 2, pp 39-54

The main part of this assignment is Hamblin's survey of work on fallacies from the Renaissance throught the mid-17th centuries. The key figures are Ramus, Bacon, and Arnauld.

There are selections from The Art of Thinking (the "Port-Royal Logic") by Arnauld (and perhaps Nicole) in the Hansen and Pinto anthology. As in the case of the second class on Aristotle, look for a passage from it to have us discuss in class. Hamblin uses a very different translation from Hansen and Pinto, so you won't find his quotations matching your text very exactly. The first part of the selections in Hansen and Pinto is clearly labeled according to the fallacies discussed, and you can use those labels to guide you. The latter part (pp. 46-54) is not so clearly marked but is probably more interesting since it presents Arnauld's own contributions to the subject (rather than his revisions of Aristotle).
