Homework on §7.1—assigned Mon 11/4 and due Wed 11/6

(to PDF format)

For each of the following sentences, take the initial steps in analysis outlined after them:

(a)

Al located every part of the machine and labeled it

(b)

Bill found only old movies in the bin

Analysis steps:

(i)

Restate the sentence by expanding on a quantifier phrase. That is, make the quantifier phrase the subject followed by is such that, using a pronoun to fill the blank where the quantifier phrase was originally. (If your restatement sounds odd, you may not have identified the full quantifier phrase.)

(ii)

Mark the class indicator of the quantifier phrase, and note any bounds or exception indicator.

(iii)

Indicate the domain and attribute of the generalization, and describe the sort of thing that would count as a counterexample (a counterexample will be a kind of thing, something in the domain of the generalization that lacks the attribute of the generalization)

(iv)

Classify the generalization as affirmative or negative and as direct or complementary.
