Write an essay (of roughly 4-6 pp. or 1200-1800 words) in which you discuss an issue concerning the philosophy of mind and two different passages in material we have discussed that bear on this issue. In the most straightforward case, these two passages will express different positions on the issue, but other relations to the issue and to each other are possible. Indeed, the passages you discuss may be in substantial agreement, and you may disagree with both of them.
The extent to which and the way in which the two passages concern the issue may also vary. For example, one may say something that raises an issue that another discusses. Each may say something that touches on an issue that is not developed very far in either. And of course, it could be that each presents an argument for some position on the issue.
Whether or not the issue is developed very far in these passages, it should be in your paper. That is, part of what you should do in the paper is to discuss what you take to be at issue and also consider two sides of the issue (whether or not both sides are represented in the passages you discuss).
So your paper should involve the following elements:
• the presentation of an issue,
• an exposition of two passages bearing on the issue,
• a discussion of two opposing points of view on the issue and their relative strengths.
The way these elements are organized can vary considerably depending on the issue and the figures you choose. In particular, remember that the second and third of these elements might be identical but need not be. These specifications are designed to open up a variety of different topics, but I’ll be happy to help you look for topics fitting them if nothing comes to mind.
Although I’ll be willing to accept your essay on paper, I’d prefer that you send a copy by e-mail (either as an attachment or in the body of a message). My address is helmang@wabash.edu.
