Texts:
Michael Loux (ed.), Metaphysics: Contemporary Readings (Routledge, 2008).
Requirements: (1) Two shorter papers (the first paper 2-3 pp. and the second paper 4-5 pp.) on topics arising from the texts you read; in both cases I will suggest topics but you will have substantial freedom of choice. (2) A longer paper (6-8 pp.) developing your own views on a topic related to what you have read. (3) Regular, prepared, and active participation in class (which may include completion of occasional brief writing assignments in preparation for discussion). Your final grade will be based on these in the following way: 15%, 20%, and 35% for the papers and 30% for class participation.
Participation, attendance and due dates: I expect you will find much of the reading challenging, and my evaluation of your preparation for discussion will reflect that. That is, what is most important is that you have identified difficulties you find with the material and come ready to work through them in class.
I do not offer an allowable number of missed classes; but, if your attendance is generally good, you will be excused nearly automatically if you notify me in advance that you will miss a class (e-mail messages are fine). After the fact, you will be excused if you give me a good reason or a dean’s excuse.
Paper due dates are subject to negotiation. I have set default due dates for the class, but I am willing to set individual due dates (within reason) for those who find them inconvenient. My policy on missed deadlines is similar to that on missed classes: I’ll re-negotiate the deadline (again within reason) if I hear in advance but after the fact I’ll expect an excuse. Unexcused missed deadlines will have an effect on your participation grade.
