• On page 65, Wes talks about becoming a man. Is there any one moment that truly makes us men?—DE
• On page 70 Wes’s mother believes that he was making money from DJing and when Tony confronts him she still believe Wes, does she really believe him or is she tricking herself into believing because she wants it to be true?—NB
• On page 74 Why did Mary not take a more assertive route in giving punishment to her son?—CB
• Page 82: (on his mother) “My desperation for her support was in constant tension with my desperation for independence and freedom.” Isn’t this pretty spot-on for us as college students as well? Also, page 98 says that two girls give each other the “how rude” face. $1 to the person who can give the best “how rude” face, the judge being Dr. Helman.—CSt
• Referring to chapter 5, pages 82-84, was Wes sincere in his promise to change or was it merely an act?—ASC
• P. 84: When Wes and his friend Shea are let go by the cops and Wes talks about how, “I swore I would never get caught in a situation like that again,” then goes on to explain a week later he was in the same situation. What possible outcomes could have occurred if they cops had taken them to jail? Do you think it would have truly kept in out of those situations?—HW
• Page 88, How did Wes’s interaction with his mother on this page shape his future relationships?—JS
• Pgs. 88-89 the author talks about Wes Moore going to military school. Do you think that getting in trouble with the law and going to military is what influenced him to make better choices? Does trouble with the law always make people change their ways?—DS
• Page 89: Was Wes’s military school experience the defining factor in him taking a different path than the other Wes?—MT
• On page 96, why was Wes so in awe of Ty Hill’s respect received from his company? Do you think Ty Hill is a foreshadow of Wes’ future?—RG
• On pg. 102, what do you think made Wes respond to his father’s question of, “Who are you?” with just a smirk and walking out of the house?—MO
