"One of the Fathers has told us that joy always depends on pain. Pain is part of joy. We are hungry and then think how we enjoy our food at last, We are thirsty..." pg. 69 Does anyone think this is more of an appreciation kind of message or is the priest trying to say nothing really exist without its opposite?—PJI

Pg. 76 - It seems here that the Preist's sins are what ended up saving his life, at least for the time being. What are your thoughts on this?—JB

Did the priest avoid telling the governor's cousin and the beggar about his true purpose for the bottle of wine because that would expose him and lead to his capture? Part 2 Chapter 2—RA

What do you think of Padre Jose's refusal to help the priest on page 118? what do you think you would do in that situation?—LK

On p. 125, the priest admits to the inmates that he is, in fact, a priest. Why do you guys think he feels the need to do this?—RS

Why is the woman in jail so quick to condone the whiskey priest's sins? (127) Doesn't it seem backwards that the sins of the priest are so insignificant to her in comparison to those of the "thieves and murderers”—JP

On p. 130, the priest says, "I know - from experience - how much beauty Satan carried down with him when he fell. Nobody ever said the fallen angels were the ugly ones." I think this carries a lot of meaning, and in my mind is one of the most important quotes from the book. What are your thoughts on the beauty of sin, of suffering, of pain?—KW

My question comes from page 140. When the priest was given the five pesos he thought about how this is the amount of money he would make to conduct Mass. Do you think that this hints at the priest's true motivation to continue being a priest?—CD

On p 145 why is the priest eating raw meat?—SM

On page 155, the whiskey priest thinks "Why, after all, should we expect God to punish the innocent with more life." Is life really as he says it is? Is he just in too much pain to think otherwise?—KM

Q: Since none of the police force or authorities have recognized the priest when they have seen him up until this point, do you think it will come down to someone ratting him out for him to be caught?—ER
