As part of preparing for our discussion of Augustine’s Confessions on Mon., you should (as always) think of questions about the text that we might discuss. Your assignment is to send me one such question before 6 am on Mon. You should (also as always) direct people to a particular location in the text; that means a page number or comparably specific description of the location.
“Books” of the Confessions are often given with two sorts of subdivisions that run in parallel, “chapters” and “paragraphs.” Both are marked in the Oxford edition (Chadwick translation) that is used for PDF on Moodle; lower-case Roman numerals are used for chapters, and Arabic numerals are used for paragraphs. These provide a useful way of referring to Augustine’s text since they appear in many editions with differing pagination, and they are often given in an abbreviated form, such as that appearing in the top margin of the Oxford edition (which, for example, uses “I. xx (31)” for the end of book I, something for which others might use a reference like “1.20.31”).
