While I work at Wabash College, I most emphatically do NOT support single sex education. I believe Wabash College should offer its excellent educational opportunities to women as well as men. I hope that one day soon Wabash College will end its policy of gender discrimination in admission. Plato: "If women are expected to do the same work as men, we must teach them the same things." |

In recent years, I've devoted much of my research agenda to using computers to teach Economics and Econometrics. After experimenting with a variety of software, I've focused my efforts on using Microsoft Excel. See Economics with Microsoft Excel for a list of projects.
Introductory Econometrics, by Humberto Barreto and Frank Howland, is published by Cambridge University Press.
Papers I've written can be found in the Economics Research page.
My CV is available as Word document, BarretoVita2006.doc.
In the summer, I run the Opportunities to Learn About Business program at Wabash College.

The video and audio links below are actually pretty large files. Depending on how your browser is configured, you may begin to play the file automatically or you might download it. Don't attempt either unless you have a fast connection.
Monte Rouge: This short film was seen by many Cubans on the island in early 2005. As usual, there is spectacular disagreement about the film. Google "monte rouge" if want to learn more.
Barreto on Maceo: This is a video of a short talk I gave on Antonio Maceo in 2003.
I also have audio, in Spanish, of the Miami DJs who tricked Chavez and Castro. They are hilarious to listen to, especially Castro at the end when he realizes he's been had:
Here's one of my favorite Alvarez Guedes jokes: El Romerillo. It's funny and depicts so clearly the confidence of every Cuban I know. Google "romerillo" to see that it's quite real.
An excellent site on all matters Cuban is available at:

I was born in Camaguey, Cuba.
In 1978, I enrolled at New College. I graduated in 1981 and went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I received my PhD from UNC in 1985 and I've been at Wabash College ever since.
In 1991-92, I spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra in the Dominican Republic. I also spent 1998-99 on sabbatical as a Visiting Professor at the University of Costa Rica. I've given lectures in Spain, Poland, and Taiwan.
In the Fall of 2005, I traveled around the world with Semester at Sea. See the voyage's position report, detailing where we were on each day of the 100-day journey. At the talent show, Allan (our crew A/V officer) sang a great song. Here it is:

My kids, Tyler, Nick, and Jonah are much older than the picture below depicts, but I'm leaving it here for them.
